Safety Tip: To clean baby's umbilical cord, it's best to use an alcohol soaked cotton swab. Swab the area at the base of the cord, where it attaches to the abdomen. This will facilitate the drying and detachment of the cord which occurs, on average, at around 2 weeks. During this time, it's recommended that baby be sponge bathed, so excess moisture will not accumulate around the cord, increasing the risk of a skin infection.
