Dr. JJ Levenstein has spent the last quarter of a century caring for children. She received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, and remained in San Francisco to serve as a research associate at the Children's Cancer Research Institute. After that, she graduated summa cum laude with a second undergraduate degree from Duke University, and completed training as a Physician Assistant with a specialty in Pediatrics at Norwalk Hospital/Yale University. She then moved to Los Angeles, where she served as a pediatric Physician Assistant with a large HMO. Five years later, she was accepted at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, during which time she got married, had a baby, and finished in four years! While at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, she was acknowledged as the outstanding pediatric intern, and was also recognized as one of the top three graduating residents in her class. Dr. JJ and Dr. Diane became fast friends during their training at CHLA – and the MD Moms have been friends and colleagues ever since!
Today, Dr. JJ has a thriving private practice in Southern California. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and serves on the clinical staff of three hospitals. She was voted one of the Best Doctors in America® in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. She remains committed to teaching, whether it is in the hospital setting, or by having medical students or pediatric residents rotate through her office. She is motivated by the satisfaction of watching her tiny patients grow into emotionally and physically healthy young adults, and content observing nervous new parents develop into empowered and intuitive caregivers. She has created a warm, homey and playful atmosphere in her office that encourages her patients to feel comfortable, and develop positive attitudes about their healthcare visits and their own well-being.
In addition to her practice, Dr. JJ is committed to promoting infant and child health by serving as an educational and media speaker. She is a regular contributor to several parenting websites and writes blogs for her patients and for the MD Moms website. She bolsters these efforts by contributing on a regular basis to charitable causes that benefit infants and children, and by devoting time to pro bono care, house calls and lending personal support to her patients and their families.
She is an amateur chef, dog-lover, charity walker and happy mom and wife who loves to travel, scuba dive, and read mystery novels and cookbooks. She has recently added “Michigan Mom” to her resume, as her son is now a Wolverine!
